Microblading healing takes around 4–6 weeks — and it can look quite different at each stage. Understanding what’s normal means you won’t panic when your brows look darker than expected on day 3, or worry when they seem to have disappeared on day 10.
Day 1–2: Freshly Done
Your brows will look bold, sharp, and darker than the final result. The skin around the strokes may be slightly red. This is completely normal — the pigment sits above the skin immediately after treatment and will soften significantly during healing.
Days 3–5: Darkening
The brows often get darker before they get lighter. A thin scab or crust forms over the strokes as part of the healing process. Don’t pick, scratch, or rub the area — removing the scab prematurely pulls the pigment out with it.
Days 5–10: Peeling and Flaking
The scabs begin to flake away naturally. This is normal and necessary. As they fall off, the brows may appear to disappear almost completely — this is the ghost phase and it’s completely normal. The pigment is still there, sitting beneath the newly formed skin layer.
Weeks 2–4: The Ghost Phase
The brows look lighter, softer, and possibly patchy. Some strokes may seem to have vanished. This is the most alarming-looking stage but it’s temporary. The pigment will resurface as the skin continues to settle.
Weeks 4–6: Settled Result
By 4–6 weeks, the brows have healed fully and you can assess the true result. Colour should be 30–50% lighter than day 1. Any gaps, uneven strokes, or areas where pigment didn’t take will be addressed at your top-up appointment (usually 6–8 weeks after the initial session).
Microblading Aftercare During Healing
- Keep brows dry for the first 7–10 days
- Apply the aftercare ointment provided by your artist — a thin layer twice daily
- No makeup on the brow area during healing
- No swimming, saunas, or heavy sweating
- No sun exposure — UV fades pigment and disrupts healing
- Do not pick scabs under any circumstances

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my microbladed brows look like they’ve disappeared?
This is the ghost phase — it happens to almost everyone between days 7–14. The pigment is still there; new skin is forming over it. It will resurface.
When can I wear makeup after microblading?
Avoid makeup on the brow area for at least 10 days, ideally until fully healed. General face makeup away from the brow area is usually fine after 3–5 days.
What happens at the microblading top-up appointment?
The artist assesses your healed result and fills in any gaps, adjusts colour, and refines strokes. It’s an essential part of the process — not optional.
